DVD - Inside The Octagon 2

This long awaited follow up to 'Inside the Octagon M.G. 1921-1945' covers the post-war years of the M.G. Car Company right up to closure of the Factory in 1980. The challenges of T-Series production with the immediate post-war materials shortages and the lack of support for a replacement to the pre-war designed TC (leading to Abingdon's own solution ' the TD) are covered in detail. The initial refusal to sanction the MGA project, which resulted in the stop-gap TF, before pressure from the North American dealerships forced a change of heart, is articulated by the late John Thornley (JWT). The long gestation period of the MGB is recorded in interviews with JWT and with Chief Designer, Don Hayter. The outstanding success of the 'B', which paved the way for the MGBGT (JWT's 'poor man's Aston Martin'), the short-lived MGC and the MGBGTV8 models is faithfully recorded. Archive film of the various record attempts at Utah is supplemented by interviews with the late John Thornley and the late Phil Hill. These interviews are priceless.

The challenges of meeting the increasingly stringent emission and safety regulations, which encroached more and more on management time set aside for development work and led (together with the BLMC decision to develop the TR7) to the eventual closure of the Factory, are well documented. The film of the final closure of the Factory and the prior demonstrations is sure to bring a lump in the throat of any true M.G. aficionado.

Yet, from these low points, the resurgence of interest in the M.G. marque was phenomenal and perhaps well illustrated by this quote from the film by David Bishop, former Executive Director of British Motor Heritage 'I don't think any other car in the world evokes such warm feelings, such membership in an elite club and I think that's what drives people to want the cars.'

This brief description cannot do full justice to this wonderful DVD; a more detailed appraisal is given in December's 'Safety Fast!'.

The film maker, Gary Watson is to be congratulated for having the foresight to make both 'Inside the Octagon' DVDs.

No M.G. aficionado should be without them.
