Hi everyone,
I am new to the T regsiter and have a 1946 TC. Can anyone advise me as to whether you can remove the starter motor by just dropping the exhaust down pipe - or do you also need to move the steering box. & secondly - anyone know any good workshops in the Birmingham area for getting a starter motor serviced & refurbed.
cheers,
Mike, Bromsgrove.

MikeY

Welcome to the friendly world of MG.
To try and shed some light on the TC starter motor removal, I will relate my own very recent experience.
I have just removed my starter motor for a general clean up and fitting a new switch. I first released the exhaust downpipe from the manifold and silencer but there was insufficient room to pull the motor forward to release the pinion end from the bell housing. To help increase the available room I the released the three steering box retaining bolts to try to gain enough room. As my car is undergoing a 40+ year rebuild my steering column is only held in position with stout string so some column movement is available. Still no sucess. I could not remove the downpipe because it would not slide forward far enough to clear the ends of the silencer studs so I removed the silencer then the downpipe and finally the motor could be removed.
Living in cornwall I do not know a repair specialist in your area but the club produces a booklet of specialest trades people which could be of help to you.
Over my 46 years of TC ownership I have collected a vast amount of information and technical tips so please do not hesitate to contact me should you need more help.
Hope you find the above of some use.

Best Regards

Graham M

Hi Graham,
Thanks very much for getting back to me - its appreciated. My car has been off the road for some time and trying to get it back this summer. Had an initial look at starter (which not currently working but could just be the switch) - and task looks daunting. Did you just clean the brushes and replace the switch ? - or would you recommend anything else for a basic service.

Thanks for your offer of support in the future - I may well take you up on that.

cheers again
Mike

Hi Mike,

Graham M (my father) will probably be offline for a few weeks.

I will email him a link to this thread so that he can pick it up when back on line.

Sorry for any delay.

Best Regards

Colin
